I Speak Recovery Classic Hoodie

Recovery is the language of Recovery Coaches!  That’s exactly what you’ll hear when you talk to Slade Skaggs!  Slade is a state certified (TX) Peer Recovery Support Specialist and co-owner of Austin’s Recovery Centered Living, a men’s sober living house.  Working as a Recovery Coach for a non-profit RCO (Recovery Community Organization) in Austin, Slade travels to rural areas and often provides trainings with emergency staff and trainings for partner organizations.  “Emergency workers are susceptible to stigma and burn out working with multiple overdose events.  Being right there, my presence shows the value and importance of not giving up on those people who may seem ‘hopeless’- I’m living proof of Recovery which makes it pretty compelling to learn the information our organization has to share.  I think it’s very important to build relationships with the first responders of the communities where we serve.”

When we asked Slade what he felt was an obstacle for Recovery coaches he shared the same as all the Recovery coaches, which was public education about what Recovery coaches do.  “There’s also a lot of public stigma.  As Recovery coaches, we meet people right where they are.  We may start out educating a person on harm reduction which, for the general public, may seem counter productive but it keeps a person alive and coming back so we can share Recovery options and opportunities with them.  There are lots of Recovery options today.  As Recovery coaches, we know the resources available in our area.  Walking alongside a person as they pursue their Recovery, sharing resources, education and information to help them create their own road map for their Recovery is pretty amazing to be a part of.  Watching a person go from ‘hopelessness’ to become the person they’re meant to be is the best, natural stigma killer there is- for the person who’s mind has told them that they’re hopeless and they’ll never get better, to the people who see them change.”

Slade recently had a back surgery to remove a bone spur that just became visible.  “A peer Recovery coach has overcome obstacles they thought at one point wouldn’t ever go away- they understand what a person is going through as they travel the person’s Recovery journey with them in real-time and real life.  I’ve had chronic pain in my back and leg for years due to an injury.  Recovery has allowed me to secure a job with great insurance and care.  For the first time in years I’m not in pain (other than healing from the surgery itself).  Sharing real-time, real life experiences with those we’re coaching can be extremely helpful for them.”
